This is a prominent one for most of us. Life can be operating perfectly fine, and out of nowhere, we get hammered with some tragedy, and just like that, we begin to worry. Have you ever paused and ask yourself why you bother? Think about it for a moment, your whole life you’ve had downtimes and up times and somehow the bad times always go away.
If you know this, why bother ever worrying or being afraid of anything? Fear is just another word for unbelief. We have a hard time trusting God in those situations and allow doubt to destroy our peace. It’s one thing to take notice of the problem and deal with it accordingly, but it’s another to let the thoughts enslave you. Fear can cause us to make bad choices, lash out at people, and even make us feel sick to our stomach.
What does the bible say about fear?
For you did not receive the Spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” – Romans 8:15
Fear puts us into bondage; another translation is slavery. When we become slaves to our thoughts, we allow the enemy to control us. The devil uses our emotions like a leash to guide us away from God’s voice and purpose. The alternative is much better in which we are adopted by our father and made free of our fears.
In 2 Timothy, we read the God doesn’t give us a spirit of fear. If it’s true, where else would that Spirit come from? I’m pretty sure you can figure that out. We have been given a spirit of power, love, and self-control. I find it fascinating that God provides us with a spirit of self-control. If we don’t have self-control, who are we giving that control to? This is where Romans spoke of a spirit of bondage. We must not allow ourselves to be enslaved by our enemy. How do we let the enemy take over control? By having fear.
How can we overcome fear? The bible gives us some pretty great answers. The most powerful weapon we have against fear is love. One big problem is many people think love is a feeling, it’s not! If we truly love we say no to our wants, our desires and follow Jesus.
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. – 1 John 4:18
When we look at the verse in 1 John, we can see that the one thing that casts out fear is our love. There is no fear in love. It also says that when we fear, we have not been made perfect in love. What is the solution? How can we be made perfect in God’s love?
The bible says love is of God, and God is love. Love is a fundamental characteristic of who God is. I believe that it’s our unbelief that pulls us away from God’s love and leads us to condemnation. If we believe in his word (Which is based on love), we have to believe that his ways are correct 100% of the time. If his ways are always right, what does God himself tell us about fear and how we are to deal with it?
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7
We are given the exact formula on how to remove fear. How are we to be anxious about nothing? The first part is by prayer and supplications. We need to ask God, make our concerns known to him, and once we do that, be thankful for what we have.
This also goes back to the verse that says worry for nothing but pray for everything. God is telling you that in order to push fears away, you have to pray! Not only pray but be thankful for what you already have.. Once you do this, he will guard your hearts and minds against what? Fear, stress, worry, etc..
Pray (Make your request known)
Be thankful for what you have and will receive
Now let’s make some proclamations about fear. We are going to read these verses out loud and release God’s authority over our lives. Anytime you have fear, come back to the page and read the proclamations out loud and follow with prayer and thanksgiving.
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
2 Timothy 1:7
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?
Of David. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
